The Challenge

RTC Antwerpen, a regional technology center supporting secondary schools in Flanders, identified a persistent issue: students were forgetting vocabulary and grammar structures almost as fast as they learned them. Traditional drill-and-repeat methods weren't creating lasting language retention.

Research suggested that immersive, contextual learning could significantly improve memorisation, but schools lacked the tools and infrastructure to provide this type of experience at scale.

The Solution

Under the direction of Louise Paepe, RTC Antwerpen launched a project to equip secondary schools across the region with VR headsets running Beyond Words. The immersive scenarios provided the contextual learning environment that traditional classrooms couldn't replicate.

Students practiced language in realistic 3D environments — a Parisian market, a Berlin office, a London street — creating stronger memory associations than textbook exercises. The multi-sensory experience of VR helped students encode vocabulary and structures more deeply.

The Results

Schools participating in the program reported significant improvements in vocabulary retention and overall language engagement. The combination of immersive context and active speaking practice created a more effective learning experience.

The project has since expanded, with more schools in the Flanders region adopting the VR language learning model.
